Hamilton police are continuing to search for both a victim and a suspect in a mid-day shooting that took place in a parking lot around Caroline and George streets on Monday.
Police were called to the scene just before 3 p.m. Monday to investigate a possible shooting believed to have taken place between two men in the parking lot adjacent to the newly opened Staybridge Suites hotel.
Police have a witness who is believed to have observed the incident though it's not known if the witness was the one who called police.
After being told that the shooter had fled into the nearby hotel, police shut down the hotel and surrounding area and called in a tactical unit, police negotiators, and a K9 unit to aid in the search. In addition, EMS units and uniformed patrol were also on the scene.
"It's not unusual to have that [presence] in a shooting where time is of the essence and the scene and evidence needs to be protected," said Sgt. Terri-Lynn Collings, a representative for Hamilton Police Services.
An exhaustive hours-long search of the hotel did not turn up the shooter or the victim. Police did recover one shell casing, however.
They also made four arrests—though no charges were laid and the individuals were later released.
The hotel and surrounding streets were reopened at 8 p.m. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact Det. Jim Elliott or Det/Cst. James O'Hara at 905-546-3816, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
