It's funny how one guitar can help shape the sound of an entire album.
That's what happened with Young Rival's new record, Stay Young. While writing, frontman Aron D'Alesio found himself gravitating back to an old favourite — his black and white Danelectro.
"That guitar kind of makes you play a certain way," D'Alesio said. "It's a fun little guitar, almost like a toy, really."
Turns out that fun was just what the band was looking for. On the Hamilton band's third record, they eschewed darker material for a bouncing, boisterous backbeat.
The result is a nine-song indie effort that's rich with the sound of D'Alesio's guitar through his Super-Reverb, anchored by the tight rhythm section of bassist John Smith and drummer Noah Fralick.
"When we'd play darker songs before, there was this vibe in the room where people were just absorbing it," D'Alesio said.
"We went a little bit lighter this time around, and just said 'lets just have fun.'"
You can stream the entire record over at Noisey.com here.
But the band is doing one better — on Thursday, they're offering the entire record as a "pay what you can" download from their Bandcamp site.
It's a move that lines up with the mindset of a lot of groups today: using a record as a tool to get people to show up at gigs rather than as a source of cash.
"It was just our attempt to get this record to as many people as we possibly can," D'Alesio said.
"We're not looking to make money from record sales," he said. "It would be foolish for a band at our level … kind of like beating a dead horse, honestly."
It's the sort of thing that speaks to the changing face of the music industry — one where and album is less a commodity and more a means to reach people.
"Unless you're U2 or something, that's just the way it is now."
