A little bit of Hamilton's war history abroad is coming to the city Saturday night.
On Aug. 19, Reverend Francis Chisholm travelled to Dieppe, France to perform a service on the beach where the 582 Royal Hamilton Light Infantry soldiers landed in 1942.
Only 211 of those returned to England after the raid, most of them injured. Another 197 men were killed and 174 were taken as prisoners-of-war. The Dieppe raid is largely considered one of the worst disasters in Canadian military history.
Saturday evening at Alberton Presbyterian Church, Chisholm will perform the same service he gave on the beach in France for the 70th anniversary of the Dieppe raid.
"We need to show our witness in memory of Hamiltonians," Chisholm said. "Lest we forget."
Chisholm is a native of Alloa, which is near Sterling, in Scotland. He came to Canada in 1955.
"It's very emotional, but it's a tribute," he said. "To honour them is a privilege."
Watch the video below to hear Chisholm talk about his service. It takes place at Alberton Presbyterian church at 527 Alberton Rd. N at 6:30 p.m.
