Ask anyone at the Hamilton Farmer's Market — they'll be quick to tell you it's more than just a place to grab groceries.

According to the market's manager Donna Lee Macdonald, it signifies community, relationships, and is an essential part of our lives.

"It's a cornerstone of society," Macdonald said. "It goes beyond selling food."

That's a weighty statement, but the age of this market can back it up. The Hamilton Farmer's Market turns 175 years old this month.

Macdonald says there's a weight that comes with that kind of history. "I feel quite a bit of responsibility to make sure we fortify the market and keep it relevant and vital," she said.

"We can't take anything for granted, and we have to keep working and shaping the experience."

The market has seen plenty of changes. Back in 1883, it was housed in old City Hall on James Street.

The ground floor was the market, while city council met upstairs. Sheds housed stalls for butchers, dairy and poultry farmers, while fruit and vegetable growers sold out of wagons.

Even a fire from the early 1900s couldn't stop sellers. When the market hall was gutted by flames in 1917, makeshift shelters were created so the open-air market could stay open.

Next spring, the market plans to reintroduce an outdoor component, as well as hosting a place for artists to sell their work.

There's a reverence for this kind of shopping experience, says Sapphire Singh, the market's presentation co-ordinator.

"You can come and teach your kids about things they see growing — there's more of an experience involved," Singh said.

"You come and you spend half your day."

Macdonald agreed, adding, "This isn't a rushed shopping experience. There's a lot of integrity here."

Each Saturday in October, the market will be hosting free cooking demos, kids activities, samples and more.

It opens at 9 a.m. and runs until 3 p.m.
