Looking for things to do Saturday afternoon and Sunday? Here are some suggestions that are happening in Hamilton.
Celebrate local talent
Get in the Juno Awards spirit on Saturday by listening to student musicians, and raise money for schools while you're at it.
Student solo and ensemble acts submitted original or cover songs — preferably by Canadian artists — for the Turn It On SoundOFF Competition. A judging panel scrutinized more than 50 video submissions. On Saturday evening, the top 10 solo acts and top five group acts will perform.
Entries came from throughout Hamilton, but also included Brantford, St. Catharines, Grimsby, Burlington and surrounding area.
Here's who's performing:
- Avery Kadish, Russell Reid Public School
- Jessie Bower, Bishop Ryan Catholic Secondary School
- Abby Rose, St. Paul Elementary School
- Dylan Friesen, Westdale Secondary School
- Zero Funk, Westmount Secondary
- Danielle Tabone, Bishop Tonnos Catholic Secondary
- Selena Rosatone, St. David
- Cam Bogle, Dr. Frank J. Hayden Secondary School
- Elle Romano, Our Lady of Fatima
- Emily Fazio, St. Joan of Arc CSS
Group acts:
- Maxmillian and Theodor Aoki, Westdale Secondary School
- 7EVEN, Westmount Secondary
- Hamilton East Chamber Ensemble, Delta Secondary School
- The Number Stations, St. Ann Ancaster
- Quintic Functions, Grimsby Secondary School
The doors open at 7 p.m. at Bishop Ryan Theatre and Performing Arts Centre. Proceeds go to MusiCounts. You can get tickets at junosoundoff.eventbrite.ca or at the door. It costs $15 for adults, $10 for students and $5 for kids under 12.
The event is organized by the Hamilton Juno host committee and education subcommittee.
The Juno Awards are March 15 at the FirstOntario Centre in Hamilton.
Have a family dance party
Mother Goose Cooperative Preschool is hosting a Family Dance Party with DJ Donna Lovejoy.
There's music, games, face painting, a snack table and more. Check it out from 2 to 4 p.m. at The Gasworks, 141 Park St. N., Hamilton. Tickets are $10 per family.
Celebrate women
Sunday is International Women's Day, and Illuminessence is holding an awards gala to celebrate "the essence of women," it says in its media release.
Awards include the Young Fem-leader of the Year, Most Viral, Reader's Choice, Legacies of Firsts and Guys Who Get It.
Guests will include Mayor Fred Eisenberger, city manager Chris Murray and MP David Christopherson.
The event is at Marquis Gardens, 1050 Rymal Rd. E. Cocktails and the red carpet start at 1 p.m. The brunch and awards start at 2 p.m. Tickets are $55 per person. A portion of the proceeds go to the NGen Youth Centre, Juravinski Cancer Centre and the Illuminessence Professional Development Scholarship.
Check out some boats
The Hamilton Boat, Fishing and Outdoor Show is this weekend at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum.
The event runs from March 6 to 8. On Saturday, it goes from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Make family art
Families are invited to the Art Gallery of Hamilton's spring exhibition opening on Sunday. Check out One-Eyed-Rabbit: Jonathan Plante, an exhibition designed especially for kids.
Kids can create art and make their own bunnies. The gallery will be open from 12 noon to 5 p.m. Admission is free. Fmaily art making — also free — is from 2 to 4 p.m.
One-Eyed-Rabbit: Jonathan Plante will be on view until May 24.
Also on display at the gallery as part of Sunday's opening: Illuminations: Italian Baroque Masterworks in Canadian Collections, Robert Burley: The Disappearance of Darkness, the Juno Photography Exhibition and the Juno Tour of Canadian Art.
The Art Gallery of Hamilton is at 123 King St. W.
