Hamilton under extreme cold warning thanks to 'bitterly cold Arctic air'

It's a beautifully sunny Sunday morning in Hamilton, but don't be fooled into thinking it's warm out there.

Environment Canada issued an extreme cold warning Sunday. It was –25 C at the airport at 9 a.m. Sunday morning, but "bitterly cold Arctic air" mixed with gusty winds could leave the air feeling as cold as –44 Sunday morning, and between –30 and –40 Sunday afternoon. 

The warnings come when the cold temperatures or wind chill heightens the risk of frostbite and hypothermia. 

The winds are expected to be as strong as 30 to 50 km/h Sunday afternoon, dying down in the evening.

Temperatures will still be extremely low Sunday night. Even without the strong winds, wind chill temperatures are expected to be between –30 and –35 Sunday night and Monday morning. 

Environment Canada warns that outside activities require more caution than usual on Sunday. "Frostbite on exposed skin may occur in just a few minutes," the forecaster warned.

Pay extra attention if you or your family members experience any of these symptoms, Environment Canada said:

• Respiratory: shortness of breath, wheezing and cough
• Cardiovascular: chest pain and arrhythmias
• Circulation: colour change of finger and toes, pain, numbness and tickling sensation in extremities
• Muscle: pain, stiffness, swelling, restricted movement, weakness
• Skin: itching, pale.
