Hamilton crime: criminals behind 380 incidents in December

The holiday season was a busy time for criminals in the city, who committed at least 380 crimes in December according to Hamilton police data.

The police's online crime map, unveiled in November, shows there were 380 confirmed criminal incidents in Hamilton from Dec. 1 to New Year's Day. That overall number may be up from November, which had some 312 incidents according to the data still available (Nov. 8-Dec.1).

Most concerning was 23 robberies from individuals — including multiple home invasions and swarmings, as well as at least one purse-snatching. In November, there were 16 robberies reported.

​Most of the robberies happened in the downtown core, though there was a cluster in East Hamilton as well.

Thefts from vehicles remained the most common type of crime, with 138 cases last month, many likely striking people doing their holiday shopping.

There were also 79 cases of motor vehicle theft in Hamilton.

Residential break-ins were also up, with 109 cases accounting for more than a quarter of all crime. There were 31 cases of robbery from commercial buildings.

Hamilton's downtown core remained the area with the highest density of crime.

There were no homicides in December.

Criminals did appear to take a break on Christmas Day itself, when there were only four incidents reported: three residential break and enters and one theft from a vehicle.

The crime map doesn't track the most common reasons people call the police: domestic violence. Nor does it track sexual assaults, impaired driving charges, or drug and alcohol violations.

Information released by Hamilton's RIDE program does provide a glimpse into impaired driving numbers. Police pulled over more than 44,000 vehicles from Nov. 26 to New Year's Eve for random checks, resulting in 30 impaired driving charges.
