Hamilton firefighters became crime fighters on Thursday when they confronted and held a suspected arsonist running from a scene.
Firefighters were called to 150 Sanford Ave. around 3:45 p.m. on Dec. 11 to answer a fire alarm sounding from the eleventh floor of the building. When they pulled up, they saw flames shooting from behind a wooden gate on the north side of the building.
As a firefighter walked closer, he saw a man jump over the fence and run away. The firefighter confronted the suspect, who punched him in the face, police say.
Firefighters held the suspect until Hamilton police arrested him. The investigation showed the man matched the description of someone seen on the eleventh floor with a fire accelerant, police say.
Police believe the culprit left the building, headed toward the wooden gate and set a mattress on fire.
Firefighters quickly doused the flames.
A 27-year-old is charged with arson and disregard for life, possession of incendiary material, assault and breach of probation.
