It'll be a cold and blustery couple of days in Hamilton, with a liberal enough dose of snow to bring back the boots and car scrapers. The snow came later than expected and has led to a slow Thursday morning commute.

As much as 10 centimetres is expected to fall Thursday, with another 2 centimetres expected overnight.

GO Transit has suspended all Hamilton express route 16 buses to and from Toronto. Passengers are recommended to take the Lakeshore West train from Aldershot instead. There have been delays all morning on that route, too, so take extra time if you can.

Google maps traffic

Google maps screenshot around 9 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 11 shows heavy traffic due to the snow in and around Hamilton.

A low pressure system moving north from Cape Cod to New England is responsible for the snow. It hit eastern Ontario Wednesday, Environment Canada said in a special weather statement.

Visibility will be low in Hamilton as winds as high as 50 kilometres per hour blow the snow around. Niagara could see as much as 15 centimetres of snow.

Roads will be slippery. Snow will continue through Thursday. On Friday, forecasters predict the weather will return to a mix of sun and cloud.

Hamilton-Wentworth Student Transportation Services, which provides bussing for Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board and Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board, reported delays on 20 school buses, some up to 45 minutes. The full list of delays is here.

As for HWDSB schools, "it is business as usual," said spokeswoman Jackie Penman.

At Toronto's Pearson airport, about 80 flights have been delayed due to weather, mainly incoming flights from the eastern U.S. and the Maritimes. Airport officials are asking passengers to please check flight statuses before arriving.

  • Burn dry, well-seasoned wood in fireplaces and woodstoves to reduce the risk of excessive creosote build-up in chimneys.
  • Allow ashes from your woodstove or fireplace to cool before emptying them into a metal container with a tight-fitting lid. Keep the container outside.
  • Keep intake and exhaust vents for furnaces and heating appliances free of ice and snow accumulations to reduce the risk of carbon monoxide build-up in your home.
  • Do not warm up a car or a snow blower by letting the engine run in an attached garage as carbon monoxide levels will build up and eventually seep into the home.
  • If in the event of a power failure and you have a portable generator, remember that it should be used only outdoors and placed in a location where fumes will not enter the building.
  • Keep space heaters at least one metre (3 feet) away from anything that can burn, including curtains, upholstery, and clothing. When refueling a space heater, turn off the heater, wait for it to cool and refuel it outdoors. Turn off or unplug space heaters when leaving the room, going to sleep or leaving the home. Use only CSA or ULC approved space heaters that are designed for indoor use.
  • Replace worn or damaged electrical wires and connections on vehicles and extension cords and use the proper gauge extension cord for vehicle block heaters.
  • Consider using approved timers for vehicle block heaters rather than leaving heaters on all night.
