It's that time of the week again – CBC Hamilton reporter Adam Carter is back with his three picks for new Ontario music that you need to listen to this week.
Adam is on the air each week on CBC Radio for In the Key of C, hosted by Craig Norris. He'll choose three Ontario bands or artists that are releasing new music for your listening pleasure.
You can hear Adam during the show every Saturday evening at 5 p.m. on CBC Radio. In the Key of C can be heard across the province, except for the GTA. Hamilton listeners can hear this segment in the audio player above.
Here are this week's picks:
Bridgitte Lebel: The View
First up this week is Bridgitte Lebel from North Bay, with The View. This song is the first single from her next album, which should be out in the spring.
Her sound is dreamy and airy, and draws from bands like Portishead, Massive Attack and Feist.
This tune sounds something like down-tempo electro-pop from the 90s, but still feels contemporary.
Ben Simon: Horizon
Peterborough's Ben Simon plays instrumental heavy metal, where he records all of the instruments himself.
Horizon is the only true ballad on his new record, which is called The Reckoning.
The story behind this song is a special one. Simon wrote it for his Dad, Steven, who suddenly passed away from cancer last year at just 49 years old.
Simon says he wrote Horizon as a way of saying, "I don't know where I'm going and I don't know what I'm going to do next – but I'm going to make you proud, and it will get better."
Harrison Kennedy: Walkin' or Ridin'
Last up is Hamilton blues great Harrison Kennedy with Walkin' or Ridin', off his new album This is From Here.
There are two types of people who play the blues: There are people who try to play it, and people who when they play, the blues just happens.
Harrison Kennedy is that second kind of person.
His songs are authentic and rootsy, and his voice just keeps getting better with age. You can hear the entirety of Walkin' or Ridin' in the radio segment in the player above.
