The busy voter's election guide: Hamilton's next mayor

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 26 Oktober 2014 | 22.47

On Monday, Hamiltonians will head to the polls to elect a new mayor. All the campaigning and platform proposals can be difficult to track through campaign season, so we've put together a guide to CBC Hamilton's coverage of the mayor's race.

Meet the front-runners

Of the 12 official candidates for mayor, the top three are Fred Eisenberger, Brian McHattie and Brad Clark. Eisenberger was mayor from 2006 to 2010. McHattie and Clark are currently city councillors -- McHattie in Ward 1 and Clark in Ward 9 in Stoney Creek.

Michael Baldasaro, Ejaz Butt, Mike Clancy, Warrand Francis, Nick Iamonico, Crystal Lavigne, Michael Pattison, Phil Ryerson and Ricky Tavares are also on the mayoral ballot.

Get to know the candidates one-on-one

To get a sense of the candidates, watch our one-on-one interviews with each of the three front-runner candidates:

Watch the debate

CBC Hamilton hosted a live mayoral debate featuring candidates Clark, Eisenberger and McHattie earlier this month. The candidates were asked about jobs, light rail transit and other Hamilton issues during the one-hour session. Watch here.

Study the issues

Among the issues facing Hamilton, a few caught the mayoral candidates' eye.

Gasification plant: McHattie came out aggressively opposed to a waste-to-energy gasification plant proposed for Hamilton's waterfront. Neither Clark nor Eisenberger said he was for or against it.

LRT: Clark argues Hamilton is not ready for light-rail transit, which sets him against McHattie and Eisenberger, who would welcome it, as long as it comes with adequate provincial funding. Watch the candidates debate the LRT issue in this clip from our debate. The issue took centre stage at a candidates' meeting in Dundas.

A few highlights from the candidates' other ideas:

McHattie would buy land to connect the Cootes to Escarpment Park to create a "park of national significance" and push for participatory budgeting across the city.

Clark would recruit and promote investment in Hamilton from outside the region, including a task force to bring conventions and events to the city.

Eisenberger wants to give special incentives for developers building in existing neighbourhoods rather than creating sprawl, and bring in online voting to boost voter turnout.

Mix-and-match your dream candidate

Our interactive graphic lets you create your dream candidate based on how the big issues align with your own views.

Consider the endorsements

Eisenberger pulled in support from two former mayors: Bob Morrow and Larry Di Ianni, though Morrow stopped short of calling his an endorsement.

Current mayor Bob Bratina is lending his support to Brad Clark.

Fifteen unions announced support of McHattie, as did Environment Hamilton. And McHattie got letters of support -- not necessarily endorsements -- from four of his fellow councillors.

Peruse the numbers

If you want to get a sense of the bigger picture for this mayoral race, read our analysis of the factors at play in this year's race, including the influence of different parts of the city. A Hamilton Spectator poll last week had Eisenberger in the lead among decided voters, followed by a virtual tie between Clark and McHattie.

Get to know what they do in their off time

Eisenberger loves Foo Fighters and Tchaikovsky. McHattie listens to locals Arkells and watches Caddyshack. And both have smoked marijuana. Find out more about their off-duty diversions in our survey.

Make sure to vote, and then tune in live Monday when we live-stream from inside City Hall as the results come in.
