Hamilton's Cootes to Escarpment EcoPark system is one of the finalists in the 2014 Great Places in Canada contest.

The contest is conducted by the Canadian Institute of Planners. Nearly 14,500 votes were cast by Canadians so far. The Hamilton EcoPark is one of 14 finalists from across Canada. The contest is intended to recognize the "vital work of our country's professional planners, and to celebrate all of the wonderful places we are so fortunate to share."

The Great Places In Canada contest describes the Cootes to Escarpment EcoPark as "an invaluable contributor to the health of the Hamilton and Burlington regions and, through its connection to the Greenbelt, to the larger Golden Horseshoe region in southern Ontario. By fostering a connection with nature and providing opportunities for outdoor recreation, the EcoPark System increases the health and happiness of the community."

Voting is now closed. A panel of experts will choose the winners in three categories: Great Street, Great Neighbourhood and Great Public Space.

Winnipeg's St. Boniface neighbourhood is home to one of Canada's largest francophone communities west of the Great Lakes. Calgary's Inglewood has more than 200 shops, cafes, restaurants and live music venues.

In Kitchener, Ont., the Victoria Park area features varied architectural styles from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

They're among finalists in the neighbourhoods category of this year's Great Places in Canada contest, along with Quartier Petit Champlain in Quebec City and Old East Village in London, Ont.

The top streets are La rue du Petit-Champlain in Quebec City and Great George Street in Charlottetown.

In the public spaces category along with Hamilton's Cootes to Escarpment EcoPark are Antigonish Town and County Library (the People's Place Library) in Antigonish, N.S.; Blockhouse Island in Brockville, Ont.; the waterfront in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.; Kiwanis Memorial Park in Saskatoon, Sask.; Broadmoor Lake Park and Centre in the Park in Strathcona County, Alta.; and McAdam Lake Campground on Wauklehegan Lake in McAdam, N.B.

Winners will be announced on Nov. 7, 2014.
