3 new Ontario music releases you need to hear this week

Written By Unknown on Senin, 13 Oktober 2014 | 22.46

It's that time of the week again – CBC Hamilton reporter Adam Carter is back with his three picks for new Ontario music that you need to listen to this week.

Adam is on the air each week on CBC Radio for In the Key of C, hosted by Craig Norris. He'll choose three Ontario bands or artists that are releasing new music for your listening pleasure.

You can hear Adam during the show every Saturday evening at 5 p.m. on CBC Radio. In the Key of C can be heard across the province, except for the GTA. Hamilton listeners can hear this segment in the audio player above.

Here are this week's picks:

Caribou — Our Love

Dundas' Dan Snaith — better known as Caribou — is back with his highly anticipated sixth album Our Love. Dan's sound tends to change from album to album, but Our Love really sounds like a logical progression from his last record — 2010's Swim.

There's a kind of simplicity here evokes memories of early techno and house music, but still sounds contemporary.

Owen Pallett and Hamilton's Jessy Lanza played on the record too, giving it even more Polaris Prize cred. Worth a listen if you're into shimmering synths and upbeat, danceable music.

Safety's Off — Hey There Sleeper Cell

Safety's Off is a melodic rock/pop-punk hybrid based out of London, and they just released this song via their Bandcamp page.

Some of the lead guitar work on this track can be a little rough around the edges, but the band puts together a sound akin to a lot of successful underground rock bands from the mid-2000s.

The standout here is singer Justin den Bok, who sounds eerily like Dustin Kensrue from Thrice, the much-beloved Orange county post-hardcore outfit.

Safety's Off is a bit poppier than Thrice, but definitely share some similarities – especially vocally.

Elliott Brood – Jigsaw Heart

Alt-country three piece Elliott Brood return on Oct. 21 with a new album called Work and Love. After a bunch of years in Toronto, most of the members of Elliot Brood are now living in Hamilton.

Jigsaw Heart is undeniably catchy. It's one of those classic "on the road songs" — and it has mandolin playing all over it, which we're total suckers for.

It's one of those tunes that sticks in your head immediately after you hear it. Definitely worth a listen.
