The Maple Leafs have signed Hamilton's Spencer Abbott to a one-year contract.

Abbott played one NHL game last season and spent most of 2013-14 with the AHL's Toronto Marlies.

The 26-year-old forward had 17 goals and 52 assists in 64 games for the Marlies and didn't register a point in his NHL debut Oct. 5.

With plenty of competition for bottom-six forward spots expected at Leafs training camp, Abbott will likely find himself in the minors to start the regular season.

David Nonis, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs made the announcement Tuesday.

Abbott, 26, made his NHL debut last season on October 5 against the Ottawa Senators.

The 5-9, 175-pound forward also registered 11 points in 11 playoff games with the Marlies. Abbott was named an AHL Second Team All-Star and was selected to participate in the 2014 All-Star Classic, but missed the game due to injury.

Abbott spent four seasons at the University of Maine and collected 146 points in 151 games in his college career. During the 2011-12 season, Abbott led the entire NCAA in scoring with 62 points in 39 games.
