A veteran Hamilton police officer who pleaded guilty to a domestic incident in front of his young son has been suspended with pay.
Const. Stephen Daniels pleaded guilty to criminal charges of assault in February. He also pleaded guilty to police act charges stemming from the incident, which involved his ex-wife.
In May 2013, Daniels went to his former wife's home to pick up some personal financial documents related to an ongoing family law case.
He was allowed into the home, but a shouting match erupted between Daniels and his ex-wife in front of their 10-year-old son. Daniels began searching the home for the documents.
He emptied a bottle of water into his ex-wife's purse and damaged the remote control for her vehicle, says the agreed statement of facts. His ex-wife, who had an order for exclusive possession of the home, told him to get out. As she was closing the front door, Daniels grabbed her glasses and threw them on the floor.
Daniels was dealing with an extremely difficult period of his life when the incident took place, Cruse said, including a "very emotional marriage breakdown" and losing both of his parents within two years.
In pleading guilty to the police act charges, Daniels was demoted from a first class constable to a second-class constable for a year — which equals a loss of about $18,000 in pay.
He was also sentenced to a year's probation after pleading guilty to the criminal charges.
Under current provincial regulations, police services cannot suspend officers without pay.
