Hamilton weather, traffic and more: Daystarter Thursday

It's Thursday, Aug. 14, the 11-year anniversary of the North American blackout of 2003.

At 4:15 p.m. ET that day, power shut down for 50 million people in central Canada and the American northeast.

And though traffic lights faltered, flights were grounded and millions of commuters had to find alternate ways to get home, many who lived through it have positive memories of the event. It encouraged people to rely on each other and interact face-to-face when their TVs, phones and computers ceased to work.

In any case, it's a day that, for many Hamiltonians, will be hard to forget.

The intersection of Brock Road and Concession 6 in Flamborough is closed Thursday morning after a two-vehicle collision that sent four people to hospital.

GO Transit is experiencing some delays on its Lakeshore West line after the 7:05 Hamilton-Union train experienced engine problems.

Ontario Provincial Police are reporting the following collisions on Hamilton-area highways:

Westbound Highway 403 at Main St. W, two-vehicle collision, vehicles on right shoulder, no injuries, 7:22 a.m.

Environment Canada's forecast for Hamilton Thursday calls for mainly sunny skies in the morning, with increasing cloudiness closer to noon. A 30 per cent chance of rain is expected for the afternoon and evening. A high of 17 C, and then an overnight low of 12 C, are in store for Thursday.

Ward 4 councillor Sam Merulla is renewing his call for the federal government to provide the city with real-time data on dangerous goods that are shipped through the city by rail. City hall had already made the request in April in the form of letter to Transport Canada, and Merulla says he's not satisfied with the ministry's response.

Also at city hall, the public works committee meets at 9:30 a.m. On the agenda: expanding the number of red light cameras in the city and adding a new GPS system to public works vehicles. Reporter Cory Ruf will tweet live at @CoryRuf.
