The jury for the 10-day inquest into the shooting of Steve Mesic will reconvene on Monday to hear the closing arguments from lawyers and deliver recommendations on how to prevent similar deaths.
Mesic, a former steelworker, was shot and killed on June 7, 2013, just steps away from his home near Lincoln Alexander Parkway and Upper Wentworth during an encounter with two police officers.
The incident took place shorty after Mesic checked himself out of a voluntary mental health facility at St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton.
The SIU cleared the officers involved in the shooting of any wrongdoing.
The coroner's inquest looks at the circumstances leading up to the former steelworker's death and makes recommendations aimed to prevent similar incidents.
Over the past two weeks, the jury heard testimonies from about 20 witnesses, including both officers involved in the shooting, two of Mesic's neighbours, the lead SIU investigator, a senior psychologist from St. Joseph's Hospital and the man who trains Hamilton police officers on how to use force. The jury also visited the site of the shooting.
The jury was dismissed for the weekend but are expected to be called back Monday morning to hear closing statements from lawyers involved in the inquest. The judge will then instruct the jury members on how to frame the recommendations.
