Ontarians are waking up to a majority Liberal party Friday morning, as Premier Kathleen Wynne steered her party to a stunning victory in last night's election. The result is also a landmark one, as Wynne becomes the first elected and female premier in Ontario and first openly gay premier in Canada.

The political shift provincially wasn't reflected locally in Hamilton, All incumbents in Hamilton's five provincial ridings held on to their posts. You can catch up with the latest results and reactions here.

With one race over, another race is just getting started 8,000 kilometres away. After a 3-1 victory by host country Brazil against Croatia yesterday, Friday will be another action-packed day for World Cup fans. Three games are in store today:

  • Mexico vs. Cameroon at 11:30 a.m.
  • Spain vs. Netherlands at 2:30 a.m.
  • Chile vs. Australia at 5:30 p.m.

After rain and thunderstorm dampened parts of this week, it is finally starting to clear up starting today.

Hamiltonians are waking up to a mix of sun and cloud, with 40 per cent chance of showers this morning and the risk of a thunderstorm. The high is 21 C today, with a low of 9 C tonight.

A gorgeous weekend with sunny weather is in store. Saturday's high is 21 C with a low of 10 C. On Sunday, look foward to a high of 23 C and a low of 14 C.

No waste drop-off

Leaf and yard waste drop-off at the Dundas Community Recycling Centre will be unavailable starting Wednesday, June 18 at 8 a.m. until Saturday, June 28 at 8 a.m., due to upgrades.

In the meantime, the city recommends using your curbside option or one of the city's other sites:

  • Kenora Community Recycling Centre at 460 Kenora Ave.
  • Mountain Community Recycling Centre at 37 Kilbride Rd.

Mesic inquest

The coroner's inquest into the shooting death of Steve Mesic wraps up today, after two weeks of testimonies from about 20 witnesses. Reporter Michael Gregory will be tweeting live from the courtroom. Follow his live blog coming up at cbc.ca/hamilton.
