Hamiltonians, rejoice – some warm, summery weather is finally on the way.
After soldiering through a wet spring that was almost 3 C colder than normal, the city is in line for a weekend with sunny skies and above average temperatures, according to Environment Canada. In fact, it will be 2 to 5 C warmer than average for the next couple weeks, says Dave Phillips, senior climatologist.
"This will be glorious kind of weather," Phillips told CBC Hamilton. "We may even see 27 C come Tuesday."
"We've had a lot of misery, but we're going to see a change from this weekend on."
Many people have no doubt been feeling that misery. It's been a cold, wet May with temperatures dipping about 1 C below average. We've also seen 85 mm of rain this month, when the norm is about 61 mm. That in itself isn't a record, Phillips says, but seeing as all that rain was spread out over 17 days, it made it seem extremely gloomy.
There were no more than three days in a row with temperatures above 20 C, adding to the gloom. "It's not as if you were drowning in the rain, but it is morose," Phillips said. "We can't seem to string a couple of good days in a row together."
But that's all set to change starting this weekend. Barring a couple of lingering showers tomorrow, every day should be above 20 C, and every night should stay in double digits. Gardening buffs can plant away without fear of frost, Phillips says.
It's difficult for Environment Canada to predict what kind of summer we'll have, as their official forecast for June to August doesn't come out until June 1 – but Phillips says preliminary forecasts are calling for a normal, average kind of summer without much extreme weather."
"And I'd always say that's best for everyone."
