Hamilton stargazers: tonight is the night.

A meteor shower that has never been seen before is expected to be visible to naked eye in the wee hours of Saturday morning — between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. ET — but NASA says "outbursts" of stellar light could occur anytime during the night.

NASA recommends gawking near the North Star at the Camelopardalis — or the "giraffe" — constellation, located between Ursa Minor (which contains the Big Dipper) and Cassiopeia to catch the one-time shooting star spectacle.

But there is a risk that the show might be hard to see from Hamilton on Saturday night. More about that in the forecast for Friday.

And if you're looking to gas up this morning, the lowest prices in the city are 123.3 at the Pioneer station on Centennial Parkway North at Arrowsmith Road.

Starting Friday, the Kenilworth Access to the Hamilton Mountain will be closed for a week as city crews complete rock scaling work on the escarpment.

GO Transit isn't reporting any major delays on its train and bus lines running in and out of Hamilton.

Ontario Provincial Police are reporting the following collisions on Hamilton-area highways:

  • Toronto-bound QEW at 7th Street, St. Catharines: Tire debris on the two right lanes, 8:45 a.m.

  • Toronto-bound QEW at Northshore Blvd., Burlington: two-vehicle collision on the right shoulder, no injuries, 6:47 p.m.

After waking up to a mix of sun and cloud and temperatures around 8 C on Friday, Hamiltonians can expect increasing cloudiness through the morning. Environment Canada says there will be a 40 per cent chance of showers in the late morning and during the afternoon. A risk of a thunderstorm is in the forecast for the afternoon. A high of 17 C is in store for the day.

Friday night is expected to be partly cloudy, with a 40 per cent chance of rain and a risk of a thunderstorm in the early evening. Let's hope it clears up for Saturday morning's meteor shower.

The weather is set to improve over the weekend. A mix of sun and cloud is in the forecast for Saturday morning, with a 30 per cent chance of showers in the afternoon. Expect a high of 22 C for the day.

Hamilton is set to see a sunny second day of the weekend. Environment Canada says a high of 22 C is in store for the Sunday.

The Niagara Escarpment is falling and the cleanup is costing Hamilton thousands in taxpayers' money. Two major road and trail closures resulting from the natural erosion of the Niagara Escarpment through Hamilton are the latest incidents related to rock slides that have forced the city to shell out to fix or limit the damage.

The city of Hamilton is looking to be among the first in Canada to crack down on the use of e-cigarettes. The city's board of health voted Thursday to ask the province for the power to restrict who buys e-cigarettes and where they can be smoked.

The adjective "epic" gets thrown around a lot, but calling this wedding proposal "epic" is hardly a stretch. According to a report in the Daily Mail, Jack Hyer, a 22-year-old from Whitefish, Montana, has done a lot of globetrotting in the past four years in between semesters studying at the University of Montana.

While he was travelling the world, he shot videos of himself lip-syncing to the Proclaimers' classic I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles). Why did he do it? Hyer was fulfilling a vow he made to himself to propose to his girlfriend Rebecca Strellnauer using footage from every country he visited. (She said "yes," by the way.)
