Saturday is a big day in Hamilton's history.
It is the 50th anniversary of the opening of the first-ever Tim Hortons location, which started selling coffee and donuts in a converted garage on Ottawa Street North on May 17, 1964.
When it opened, Store No. 1 sold a cup of brew and a honey dip treat for 10 cents each. How times have changed.
On a more serious note, Saturday is the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia, which is aimed at ending discrimination and violence against lesbian, gay, trans, bisexual and queer (LGBTQ) individuals.
Hamilton police are observing the occasion on Friday, holding a ceremony at central station (155 King William St.) at 10 a.m. Speakers will include Deputy Police Chief Eric Girt and Deirdre Pike, chair of the Hamilton Positive Space Collaborative.
Ontario Provincial Police are reporting the following collisions on highways in the Hamilton area:
- Toronto-bound at Bronte Rd., Oakville: three-vehicle collision blocking the right lane, no injuries, tow truck at scene, 8:27 a.m.
GO Transit isn't reporting any major delays on its train and bus routes running in and out of Hamilton.
Environment Canada predicts clouds and a 30 per cent chance of rain in the morning, shifting to a mix of sun and cloud before noon. A high of 14 C is in store for Friday.
Expect a relatively cool overnight period — a low of 3 C and a risk of frost are in the forecast.

Students at Mohawk College are suffering a "crisis of quality" because of a new learning system that is increasingly moving coursework online and out of the classroom, according to a new report from the union that represents college instructors.
What the college calls "blended learning" is just one of the problems stemming from a "climate of fiscal austerity" in Ontario colleges that is placing more weight on budgets than education, writes Kevin MacKay, a pop culture and sociology professor at Mohawk College and the report's author.
