Things to do in Hamilton this weekend

It'll be cold in Hamilton this weekend — temperatures of -7 C on Saturday and Sunday, leading into lows of -16 C on Monday.

Here are some ways to take your mind off it.

Disney on Ice: Princesses and Heroes

Mickey Mouse, Tinker Bell, Aladdin, Jasmine, and more — see all your favourite Disney characters in action at the FirstOntario Centre (formerly Copps Coliseum). Performers bring the tales to life with music, skating, and acrobatics. There will be five shows this weekend: Saturday at 11 a.m., 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., and Sunday at 11 a.m., and 3 p.m. Tickets can be found here.

Market Value

Market Value is a six-day arts advocacy project that began earlier this week. It will demonstrate the value of artistic labour. Guests will see artists from Hamilton and area engaging and educating the crowd on the everyday labour it takes to create their art. Artists will also participate in a panel discussion and after party on Saturday, March 15 at the Workers Arts and Heritage Centre at 51 Stuart St. starting at 8 p.m.

Treble Threat presents: Arrivals and Departures

This show features 22 short vignettes that capture some of the most beautiful and possibly heart-breaking moments of airport life in the 80's and 90's. Performances run on Friday and Saturday of this weekend and next. Admission is $18 and runs from 8 to 10 p.m. at the Staircase Theatre located at 27 Dundurn St. N. 

Romeo and Juliet Ballet

Experience Shakespeare's everlasting story of love, lust, and rebellion interpreted into ballet by Bengt Jörgen. Buy tickets here for this one-night-only performance at Hamilton Place on Saturday, March 15 at 7:30 p.m. More information available here.

Cooking at the Market

Join chefs, dietitians, farmers, and food experts each week taking the market's fresh food and turning it into conveniently quick, easy and nutritious recipes. These events are all ages, and free. No registration is required but space is limited. You can catch this at the Downtown Hamilton Farmers' Market from 12 noon to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 15.

Spring Tide Bulb Show

Enjoy the Gage Park Tropical Greenhouse, see hundreds of colourful spring flower bulbs in bloom, and be one of the first to experience spring before it happens. Also in the greenhouse is a turtle pond, waterfall, fishponds, and birds from the aviary. The experience is free and runs from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily. This Saturday and Sunday will be the last days of the event.
