St. Patrick's day revellers should keep in mind that there will be extra patrols and RIDE checkpoints set up over the weekend, Hamilton police say.

"As is tradition, the day is celebrated often by drinking," reads a police news release. "Occasionally, excessive drinking causes a few to make poor choices."

Both police and city bylaw enforcement will be stepping up patrols and "proactive visits" for the entire weekend, from Friday to Monday. Officers will also be working closely with "community partners" to ensure a safe environment, the release reads.

"Police will take a zero tolerance approach to noise and liquor infractions and to assist in ensuring safe roads, extra RIDE programs will be set up throughout the city."

The police service's goal is to have a "safe and peaceful" St. Patrick's Day weekend.
