Hamilton Daystarter: Everything you need to know Friday

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 21 Maret 2014 | 22.46

Happy Friday, Hamilton!

And what better day of the week than Friday is there to celebrate World Puppetry Day. (Incidentally, it's also the start of opening weekend for the new Muppets movie, Muppet Most Wanted.)

From Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy, to Elmo and Grover, to the marionettes that were star associates of misters Rogers and Dressup, puppets are fixtures of childhood entertainment that are also beloved by adults.

So on World Puppetry day, we ask: Who's your favourite puppet? Is it the star of a kids TV show, is it a doll you had as a youngster, or is it one of those adult-oriented puppets that uses salty language to riotous effect?

Let us know on Twitter (@cbchamilton) or on our Facebook page. (And no, politicians don't count.)

GO Transit isn't reporting any delays on its Lakeshore West train or bus routes.

Ontario Provincial police are reporting the following collisions on Hamilton-area highways:

  • Two-vehiclecollision on Toronto-bound on the downside of the Skyway, no injuries, vehicles off to shoulder — 7:53 a.m.

Though the city woke up to wintry cold in the morning— it was –5 C at 6 a.m., but felt like –9 C with the wind chill — Friday is set to be bright and relatively mild. Environment Canada says mainly sunny skies and a high of 5 C are in the forecast.

But increasing cloudiness and rain showers or wet flurries are expected tonight, with a risk of freezing rain in the late evening and after midnight. Environment Canada predicts an overnight low of 0 C for Friday night and says temperatures should rise to 3 C by the morning.

Overnight showers are expected to taper off into Saturday morning. A mix of sun and cloud is set to take hold later in the day and a high of 4 C is in the forecast.

Sunday is expected to be cold one. A mix of sun and cloud and a high of –6 C are in store for the day.

Ratepayers in Hamilton can expect an average property tax increase of $52 in the coming year. The city's general committee voted in favour a budget that is expected to receive council approval next week. The budget includes a 1.5 per cent tax increase for average Hamilton homeowner.

Also: suburban Hamilton HSR users are about to get more transit service, after the city voted to increase bus frequency on its 44 Rymal/Garner and 43 Stone Church routes.

Though it runs through some of the Mountain's most populated areas, the Rymal/Garner route doesn't have weekend service. But that's about to change.

Hamilton photographer Harry Gils posted this naturalistic shot to Instagram.

Is this trick golf shot real, or a nifty optical illusion?
