Hamilton Daystarter: Everything you need to know Wednesday

It's the last day of winter.

For some, the passing of winter is a sombre occasion, a time to reflect on all of the surprises the season foisted us.

There were the snowstorms that left Hamiltonians up to their knees in powder, the countless cold weather alerts and overnight lows below –20 C.

And who could forget the ice storm of Dec. 22 that felled decades-old trees, downed power lines and left thousands of residents in the dark just days before Christmas.

But before you get all teary about the passing of Winter 2014, just remember the cold weather is only another eight or nine months away.

Also: Did you see what you thought was a shooting star over Hamilton last night? There were several reports on Twitter of meteor sighting over the city, other parts of Ontario and New York. Did you see it?

Hamilton police are reporting the following collisions on city roads:

Brewster and Birchcliffe Cr., Hamilton, collision between school and bus, no injuries, crash has cleared, 8:30 a.m.

Ontario Provincial Police say there are no collisions causing delays on highways in the Hamilton area.

GO Transit isn't reporting any delays on its train and bus routes running in and out of Hamilton.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Hamilton and say that freezing rain is possible on Sunday morning. Other parts of southern Ontario are under freezing rain warnings, the agency says.

Rain is in the forecast for Thursday. Environment Canada says there will be a risk of freezing rain in the morning. The expected high for the day is 6 C.

Rain is set to turn to snow or blowing overnight, with winds of 40 km/h gusting to 60 km/h. The snow is expected to continue into the morning and taper off in the evening. A high of 2 C is in the forecast for Thursday.

A nicer Friday is in store for Hamilton, with the forecast calling for partly cloudy skies and a high of 3 C.

Last year, the federal government changed the rules on how medical marijuana is grown and distributed in this country. Ottawa has put out a call for proposals from enterprises wishing to become licensed growers of medicinal pot.

A handful of potential growers have applied to set up shop in Hamilton. A couple of Hamilton councillors say there is lots of greenfield and brownfield land that could be used to grow the drug. One remarked that the production of medical marijuana "could be the next big business in Hamilton."

On Wednesday, the city's general issues committee is set to vote on whether to sell Westfield Heritage Village in Rockton to the Hamilton Conservation Authority, which already operates the site. Local councillor Robert Pasuta said it's a transfer that's long overdue.

Reporter Samantha Craggs will be covering the meeting, in which the city will also decide upon the fate of planned 3-km two-way bike lanes on Cannon Street, a project that's expected to cost the city $1.6 million.
