Hamilton Daystarter: Everything you need to know Thursday

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 13 Maret 2014 | 22.46

Springtime weather, we hardly knew ye.

After a brief taste of what spring could have been like earlier this week, Hamilton was covered in 22 cm of snow – breaking the old record of 20.3 cm from 1968.

While you can expect a reprieve from snowfall today, don't expect winter to be gentle. A wind chill warning is still in effect for the Hamilton area.

And did you know: In 1928, Eileen Vollick of Hamilton took her final flying tests and became the first Canadian woman to receive her pilot's licence. Vollick said after her first flight that she felt "at home" in the cockpit. Instead of taking companies up on their offers to demonstrate their planes, she entered the world of aerobatic flying and skydiving.

Expect some delays this morning as crews try to cope with all the snow that fell on Wednesday. GO trains heading from Aldershot to Union have been experiencing delays this morning. After QEW express bus service was suspended yesterday, GO isn't reporting any delays on that front Thursday.

Police are warning drivers to be careful on the roads. Here are the accidents and slowdowns they're seeing:

  • A vehicle collision at Burlington Street East and Parkdale Avenue North. 8:06 a.m.
  • Traffic slowdowns going east on the Linc. 8:05 a.m.
  • A vehicle collision at Upper James Street and Mohawk Avenue East. 7:59 a.m.
  • Traffic problems on Main Street East and Kenilworth Avenue North. 7:51 a.m.
  • A vehicle collision at Upper Ottawa Street and Limeridge Road East. 7:49 a.m.
  • QEW Toronto bound at Third Line, Oakville: Single vehicle into the left ditch. 7:15 a.m.
  • Traffic problems on the Linc Eastbound at Ancaster. 7:14 a.m.
  • Traffic problems at King Street East and Glencairn Road. 7:06 a.m.
  • Hwy 403 eastbound at York Blvd., single vehicle collision on the right shoulder. 6:33 a.m.
  • A vehicle collision at Fletcher Road and Kirk Road in Glanbrook. 6:04 a.m.

A wind chill warning is still in effect for Hamilton. As of 7 a.m., it was a frigid –19 C with a wind chill of –30 C. You can expect sunny skies for most of the day, with clouds rolling in come the afternoon.

There's a 30 per cent chance of flurries overnight, but thankfully, temperatures are set to rise up towards the freezing mark by morning.

Friday's high is set to be 6 C.

This great (and depressing) shot comes from Jason Leach:

A local environmentalist wants to make scientists out of cyclists over the summer.

Environment Hamilton received $1,200 from Mountain Equipment Co-op to buy compact air quality monitors. The technology is small enough to mount on the handlebars of a bicycle, which is exactly what Executive Director Lynda Lukasik wants people to do.

The Ontario Special Investigations Unit (SIU) says it is going to probe the involvement of two officers in an arrest after a Saturday night stabbing spree in east Hamilton. A 27-year-old male suspect sustained a broken ankle after a foot chase with police outside an apartment building in the city's Parkdale neighbourhood.

Meanwhile, another Hamilton police officer has been cleared of any wrongdoing in connection with a high-speed motorcycle chase and crash on the Red Hill Valley Parkway last year.

This guy explains the science of the burn from eating a ghost pepper while eating a ghost pepper:
