After safety reasons closed it eight months ago, the old century farmhouse that houses the Hamilton Children's Museum is finally getting fixed.
Taxpayers will spend $400,000 to fix up the 1870s building in Gage Park, which was closed last year because of structural concerns.
The nearly half a million will put a dent in the city's capital reserves, but it's the cheapest option. Building a new home for the museum would cost about $10 million.
The museum has been closed since July, and those involved with it are looking forward to a resolution, said Ian Kerr-Wilson, the city's manager of heritage resource management. Staff has still been doing programming, but they've been mobile.
"The bottom line is we need to get back into that space, and it's very important that it's structural sound and people can bring their families there with complete confidence," he said.
It will still be another six months before the repairs are done.
The children's museum has been in the Gage Park house since the 1970s. An engineering firm noticed "structural deficiencies" and recommended the city close it.
Originally a farmhouse for the Gage family, the house at 1072 Main St. E. has served as a lawyer's office and a residence for the park manager.
The current museum offers year-long programming and sees as many as 400 visitors a day. The city spends $27,000 to $30,000 per year maintaining the building.
