A snow fall warning is in effect for Hamilton where as much as 20 centimetres of snow is expected to fall throughout the day. It's been a wintry start to the New Year for the city with a cold weather alert issued on New Years Eve continued today as well.

This morning at 9:00, the temperature was - 28 C with the wind chill. Who wants to be the first to test if a cup of hot water will freeze before it hits the ground?

Along with fresh snow, fallen snow will be blowing with wind from the northeast at 40 km/h gusting to 60 km/h, reducing visibility to as low as 400 metres.

For most of the day the temperature will remain steady at -16 C but by night time the wind chill will drop to - 29 C. The snow is expected to end by midnight. And it will be cold tomorrow, too, with a high of - 14 C and a wind chill of - 30 C.

A cold alert is issued when current or anticipated weather conditions are at or below minus 15 degrees Celsius or minus 20 with wind chill.

But when it's this cold does anyone really notice?
