Hamilton Daystarter: Everything you need to know Monday

Written By Unknown on Senin, 16 Desember 2013 | 22.46

It's the Monday after a big snowfall, and one week to go before the holidays. The kids will be at home next week. Here's the dreaded question: are you ready?

If you are, send CBC Hamilton your holiday light photos! We'd like to see what you've been up to.

Before you head out the door this morning, bundle up! Lots of snow still on the ground and with the wind chill, it feels like -21 C on your walk to work and school.

Highways are still slow moving Toronto-bound at 8:45 a.m. On the 403, it starts at the LINC. On the QEW, the slow-down starts before heading over the Skyway Bridge.

On QEW Fort Erie-bound, an ambulance is en route to a single-car collision blocking the left lane.

On the QEW Toronto-bound at Burlington Street, another single-car collision is in the left shoulder. No injuries there.

In town, a number of delays on the road. King Street East is slow from Wentworth to James, as is Main Street from Dundurn to Wentworth.

Heading down into the lower city, both West 5th and Upper James are slow heading towards access routes. Upper Gage is also slow from Mohawk to Concession Street.

Here's a map of ongoing construction projects around the city that might slow down your morning commute.

A cold start to the last week before the holidays this morning. It's -14 C at 8 a.m., but feels more like -21 C with the windchill. Lots of snow on the ground, so put your boots on before heading out the door.

A mix of sun and cloud out today and a high of -9 C. Overnight, we could see some snowfall around midnight and a low of -11 C.

On Tuesday, expect to see periods of snow through the day until the evening.

A 9-year-old boy was killed Sunday afternoon after being struck by steel. The boy was with his father on Imperial St., near Sherman Avenue North and Burlington Street East, in a building located in a complex of factories and warehouses. A piece of steel fell and hit the boy, crushing his dead. He was later pronounced dead at Hamilton General Hospital.

It was not clear why the boy and his father were in the complex. His father was not with him at the time of the accident.

Join CBC Hamilton and Ontario Today at noon Monday for a chat in combination with a live radio interview with Ontario Conservative leader Tim Hudak. Tune your radio to 99.1 at noon and log onto CBC Hamilton to participate on an online conversation with McMaster University politics professor Peter Graefe.

For the day's world headlines, give CBC AM Express a listen.

The world said goodbye to Nelson Mandela yesterday. Here's a shot of the statue of him unveiled after his funeral in the South African capital, Pretoria.

Big news for the tech world this morning. Google purchased engineering company Boston Dynamics, a company famous for creating robot animals like the fastest robot on four-legs called Cheetah. If you ask me, the robots are a little creepy, but this is the future.

In honour of that acquisition, here's a recent video from Boston Dymanics with the Legged Squad Support System (LS3). It's a chubby dog-like four-legged robot designed to travel 20 miles on rough terrain, while carrying 400 lbs. Here's a field test in Twentynine Palms, CA.

Need a break from the snow? Its trivia night at the Baltimore House on King William Street. Bring your A game at 8 p.m.
