Hamilton Daystarter: Everything you need to know Friday

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 13 Desember 2013 | 22.46

A dusting of snow to get us ready for a weekend of more of the white stuff. Expect up to 10 cm tomorrow! So get out the snow gear.

If you're going to be on the roads tomorrow, drive carefully, especially on highways.

It's Friday the 13th. Anyone superstitious out there? Tell CBC Hamilton what you avoid on days like today, tweet us @CBCHamilton.

Good news is: it's also national Ice Cream Day! No jokes, I'm not pulling anyone's leg here. It's actually Ice Cream Day. Who puts Ice Cream Day in the middle of December?

The monthly James Street Art Crawl is going on tonight starting at 7 p.m., so come out and finish your Christmas shopping by supporting some local businesses.

The back ups on the QEW and 403 have cleared.

In town, King Street East from John to Queen, and Main Street from Dundurn to John are both slow at 8:45 a.m.

A note for weekend drivers: Southcote Road from Garner Road to Stonehenge Drive in Ancaster will be closed for sewer repair between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. HSR buses servicing Redeemer University College will be on detour via Kitty Murray Lane and Stonehenge Drive.

Here's a map of ongoing construction projects around the city that you might run into this weekend.

It's certainly not as cold out as it was yesterday, but there is a bit of snow on the ground. Its -6 C for your walk to work this morning, but feels like -13 C. Still chilly, but without yesterday's bite. And we've reach our high for today already.

There is a 60 per cent chance of flurries this afternoon and into the evening. Proper snowfall is expected to start overnight. About five cm could fall. A low of -11 C.

For the weekend, more snow! Bring out the toboggans.

Saturday has a high of -6 C and another five to 10 cm of snow could fall, so if you have to be on the highways tomorrow, be sure to drive carefully.

Sunday, flurries. No major snowfall, but the temperature will drop again. A high of -9 C.

Hamilton Police are looking for more suspects after one arrest in connection to the murder of a McMaster student. Tyler Johnston was shot and killed in the early hours of Nov. 30 at a plaza at King East and Caroline streets.

Police arrested 19-year-old Brandon Barreira of Cambridge. He was set to appear in court Thursday. Police are hoping two more suspects can be identified with the security camera video they released.

The city will look into assembling a non-profit board of directors to oversee the troubled Hamilton Farmer's Market.

At a meeting Thursday, the market subcommittee voted to look into a board that includes councillors, vendors and the general public to try to change the fortunes of the market that some vendors say is in a "crisis."

Change needs to happen at the farmers market, said Shane Coleman, president of the stallholders association. And this is exactly what they were looking for.

We're not the only ones dealing with snow this weekend. Take a look at this shot of Cairo. The last reported snowfall was over 100 years ago.

As the world prepares to say goodbye to Nelson Mandela this weekend, tributes keep popping up – literally. The Soweto Gospel Choir donned grocery store's uniforms and surprised Saturday shoppers. A beautiful tribute to Madiba.

Ahhh, the season for Christmas concerts. Fieldcote Memorial Park & Museum presents the annual Big Sing tonight at the Ancaster Old Town Hall (310 Wilson St.) from 7-9 p.m. Guests will be encouraged to sing along to well-known Christmas classics and enjoy the special performances. Tickets at the door for $8 per person or $15 for a family.

The City of Hamilton and Stewart Memorial Church are holding a memorial for Nelson Mandela tomorrow at Hamilton City Hall, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in city council chambers. The memorial will feature many local speakers. A book of condolences for the Mandela family is in city hall and will be available to sign until after Saturday's service.

If you're looking to stay away from snow this weekend, here are few films to check out. The Hobbit opened to late-night showings yesterday. Also in theatres today, Saving Mr. Banks, a Disney film starring Tom Hanks about the 20-year journey Walt Disney took to get the rights to Mary Poppins from author P.L. Travers.
