Hundreds of hydro customers who have been without power since Saturday due to a wicked ice storm will spend Christmas Eve in the dark, as the restoration time is estimated to be as late as midnight.
As of 9 a.m. Tuesday, 8,772 Hydro One customers are experiencing power outages, down from 22,000 on Monday morning, says spokesperson Tiziana Baccega Rosa. The estimated restoration time is midnight.
"We are hoping crews are able to keep their time barring that they don't encounter any difficult situations," she said.
Baccega Rosa said customers who have access to internet can check the power outage map on Hydro One's website for the latest updates. The map shows where crews are working and the estimated restoration time. Customers with access to mobile phones can download a free mobile app to check the status of their power.
About 400 Horizon Utilities customers are without power on Tuesday, down from 1,200 Monday night, says Larry Roberts, manager of external communications.
Crews are currently working in neighbourhoods with multiple outages before moving on to address small pockets of scattered outages, Roberts says.
Dozens of customers at the Colleen Crescent neighbourhood and Old Guelph Road and Harmner will likely have power by noon. Seven customers on Charlton Avenue West are expected to have power by 4 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.
The restoration time for the 220 affected customers scattered throughout Hamilton is yet to be determined.
Roberts says crews on the ground are facing challenging situations.
"You don't know what you are getting into until you get there."
Saturday's ice storm is comparable to the summer storm in July, which dumped 53.6 millimetres of precipitation and downed both tress and power lines, Robert says. In that storm, 14,000 customers were left without power.
