Things to do in Hamilton this weekend

Monday is Remembrance Day. In advance of the occasion, Hamiltonians will have several opportunities this weekend to reflect on the horrors of war and the sacrifices of the men and women who have served in Canada's armed forces.

The weekend will also feature more traditionally entertaining events, as well as a conference on women in politics.

Here's a list of things to do in Hamilton this weekend.

Hamilton Military Museum

The Hamilton Military Museum (610 York Blvd.) is offering visitors free admission this weekend. The exhibitions, including a special Remembrance Day display, will be open from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

For more information, go to the museum's website.

Elect More Women conference

Are you passionate about electoral politics? Or would you just like to see more Hamilton women rise prominent positions of power? Then Saturday's Elect More Women conference might pique your interest. The event, running 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at City Hall, is designed to arm women of different political stripes with tools to run for office.

Admission is free and registration starts at 8:30 a.m.

Kim's Convenience

The play Kim's Convenience won audiences' hearts and critics' raves when it debuted in the Toronto in 2012. Now touring Canada, the show depicts the struggles and successes of a Korean immigrant family running a convenience store in a gritty Big Smoke neighbourhood. Playwright Ins Choi, who penned the drama, stars as Jung, who clashes with his authoritarian, tradition-bound father.

The show's stint at Theatre Aquarius (190 King William St. ) kicked off on Wednesday and runs until Nov. 23. This weekend will see 8 p.m. performances on Friday and Saturday, and a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday.

Ticket prices range form $32.77 to $89.77, and are available online at Theatreaquarius.org or by phone at 905-522-7529.

Just for Laughs Comedy Tour

The Just for Laughs Comedy Tour chuckles into Hamilton Place on Saturday. Canadian game show host and cast member of CBC Television's Mr. D will host, while funnymen such as Just for Laughs vet Jeremy Hotz and world-renowned American stand-up comic Godfrey will also take the stage.

Tickets range from $46 to $53 and are available at Ticketmaster.ca.

Veterans' Parade

Former soldiers, active service men and women as well as cadets will march from the John Foote V.C. Armouries (200 James Street North) to the Gore Park cenotaph as part of the annual Veterans Parade on Sunday.

Starting at 10:15 a.m., the procession will run south on James Street North to King Street, and then east into the park. The parade will be followed by a memorial service, set to begin at 10:45 a.m.

Glanbrook Remembrance Ceremony

Though most of the city's Remembrance Day ceremonies are planned for Monday, Glanbrook is hosting its official service on Sunday afternoon. Participants are set to gather at 2 p.m. at the cenotaph at the Glanbrook Arena (4300 Binbrook Rd.) for the event.
