The company looking to partially demolish James Street Baptist Church as part of a condo development is submitting a revised proposal to the city.
A subcommittee that advises the city on whether to grant demolition permits will get the first look at the new proposal from Stanton Renaissance at its regular meeting Wednesday.
Michael Adkins, the chair of the heritage permit review subcommittee, says he expects the new proposal to deal with some of the issues raised by the committee when it first looked at the original proposal several weeks ago. The committee expects to make its final recommendation to the city at that meeting, he said.
The original proposal from Stanton Renaissance was to demolish two-thirds of the 1878 church and turn the space into condos and retail. The church sits in a historic row of downtown buildings that includes the Pigott building, the Sun Life building and St. Paul's Presbyterian.
The subcommittee first looked at the proposal this month, asking for more information on retaining an additional wall on the church, and more about what developers plan to put in its place.
The presentation Wednesday should address some of those concerns, Adkins said.
"They'll be presenting some new ideas similar to what they've put forward before, but with some improvements, which probably come close to what the committee is hoping to get," he said.
The meeting will be in room 192 at city hall on Wednesday at 5 p.m. The subcommittee advises planning staff, which in turn advises city council.
