Man, 50, sent to hospital with a fractured leg

Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has launched an investigation after a police chase in Hamilton on Saturday ended in a two-vehicle crash that left a pedestrian with a fractured leg.
It all started shortly before 10:30 p.m. when the driver of a silver Honda failed to stop for police, according to a statement released by the SIU on Monday.
A Hamilton police officer started following the car but lost sight of it. A second officer spotted the car shortly after and began following it.
The Honda was travelling southbound on Hess Street when it collided with a black Kia sedan travelling eastbound on Herkimer Street. The Kia struck a bus shelter on the southeast corner of the intersection, hitting a man inside the shelter. The 50-year-old man was taken to hospital and treated for a fractured leg.
The SIU is not investigating the injuries of the passengers in the two cars because they are minor, according to Monica Hudon, the SIU's communications coordinator.
Mike Collins said he heard the crash while sitting in his house, located just next to the bus shelter.
"There was an initial smash and then the screeching of the bent vehicles coming to rest," he said. "You could actually feel the whole rumbling and shaking of it."
Collins said the the driver of the Honda was lying in the road and "seemed definitely in distress," while the two people in the KIA did not appear to be injured.
Hamilton Police are not commenting on the case because it is currently being investigated by the SIU.
The SIU is called in whenever police officers are involved in incidents in which someone has been seriously injured, dies or alleges sexual assault.
