Alcohol was not a factor in a head on collision that killed a 21-year-old Caledonia man near the Hamilton airport, police say.

Around 6:20 a.m., police were called to 1155 Fiddlers Green Road between Book Road and Butter road after two vehicles slammed into each other.

A Mazda Protégé had been travelling northbound on Fiddler's Green while a Ford F150 truck was going south. Both vehicles collided head on in the northbound lanes, police say.

The driver of the Mazda died at the scene. He was the only person in the car, police say. His identity is not being released at the family's request.

The 33-year-old St. Catharines man who was driving the Ford truck was treated and discharged at the scene of the accident, police say. Alcohol has been ruled out as a factor.

Hamilton police spokesperson Debbie McGreal-Dinning told CBC Hamilton that the investigation is still in its early stages, and she did not yet know if any charges are pending.

There have been 12 vehicle-related deaths in Hamilton this year.
