Police arrest Hamilton suspect in west-end sexual assaults

Police have arrested a 20-year-old Hamilton man in connection with two west-end sexual assaults.

Both incidents occurred in the Emerson Street area just south of the McMaster University, a neighbourhood with a high concentration of student housing.

Police said tips from the public helped identify a suspect after police released a description and asked for assistance.

"He struck the same area twice so people were very cognizent of what was going on," said Debbie McGreal, spokesperson for Hamilton Police. "The public was a great help."

McGreal said police made the arrest Wednesday night without incident. A description of the man was released shortly after the first assault happened last Thursday.

That incident occurred at about 11:30 p.m. Police say a woman walking westbound on Sussex Drive, near Emerson, heard shuffling behind her and started to run. A man grabbed her from behind, held her mouth and sexually assaulted her. She fell, managed to free herself and screamed. Two witnesses heard the scream and chased the suspect west on Sussex and then South on Emerson. The woman suffered minor injuries from the fall.

The second incident occurred Sunday just before midnight a couple of blocks further north and had similarities. A woman was walking southbound on Emerson Street when she was grabbed from behind and sexually assaulted. She screamed and the male let go and ran away, heading north on Emerson and then turning east on Ward.

The assaults motivated McMaster University security services to issue a safety alert.

Before the arrest, police had said they believed the assaults to be related.
