Waterdown's population is set to double in the coming years, largely with commuting residents. So Metrolinx should consider extending GO transit service for its residents.

That's the gist of a letter the city is set to write to Metrolinx. The letter will argue that Waterdown's population will grow by 17,000 in the next three to five years. So it would be in GO's interest to have bus service there.

The move is the work of Coun. Judi Partridge from Ward 15 in Flamborough. Waterdown has about 20,000 residents right now, but it is rapidly expanding, she said. And most of those people work in Toronto, Oakville, Mississauga and Brampton.

"It can't happen soon enough for me," Partridge said.

"A lot of residents have approached me over the last year and a half. They're frustrated. They want more connectivity."

Currently, the city runs a small shuttle bus for about three hours each morning and afternoon taking commuters to the Aldershot GO station. The shuttle bus runs in a simple one-way loop around the town, Partridge said.

"It's an almost non-existent transit system," she said. "With the growth that's coming to Waterdown, it's just not adequate."

The province has stated a priority for a regional transportation system, Partridge said. GO also plans to build a new transit facility for bus maintenance and storage in the Clappison's Corners industrial park.

The general issues committee passed a motion on July 9 to send the letter. Council will ratify that decision Friday.

It will suggest a bus that operates via Dundas Street between Waterdown and the Kipling subway station, or a variant to the existing route 47 GO bus that runs along the highway 407 corridor.
