Police have arrested seven suspects after BB gun pellets were fired at a west Hamilton elementary school on Wednesday.

The shots shattered four windows at the school, showering glass into rooms with students in them.

No one was hurt in the incident.

Around 11:20 a.m., police received a call about projectiles hitting windows on the south side of St. Joseph's Catholic Elementary School, located on Locke Street South near Herkimer.

The school went into lockdown, said police spokesperson Debbie McGreal-Dinning.

By noon, police had arrested six individuals and seized a unspecified number of pellet guns. An additional person was arrested before 2 p.m.

The seven arrested were all teens and all males. They were found shortly after the incident in close proximity to the school, said McGreal-Dinning. They were arrested without incident.

She said charges are pending, but could not say what the intent or motive was.

"One ambulance responded and that was for stress-related issues," said McGreal-Dinning. "And the school, after lifting the lockdown they had their own social workers come in to deal with students and staff and our victims services people went out as well.

'Panic'

Lisa Sidorkewicz, mother of two children who attend the school, said she felt "extreme panic" and wanted to pull her kids out of class when she first learned of the incident. However, a friend reassured her that no one had been injured and that arrests had been made.

Sidorkewicz said she planned to discuss the day's events with her children when they returned home, to help them process what went on.

"My son said that he was really scared, that he felt panicked basically," she told CBC Hamilton while picking her kids up at the end of the school day. "I haven't talked to my daughter yet, so I'm not sure how she felt."

Sidorkewicz said she was satisfied with how school officials as well as police dealt with the shooting.

"It sounds like they did a good job of keeping everybody calm, which is crucial in these situations," she said. "When I called the school this morning, they were very calm on the phone, which made me feel a lot better as well."
