A high profile historic building that cost millions to renovate in Hamilton's downtown core now has a full slate of tenants.

Artists Brendon Coulter and Valerie Cousens are renting out the last vacant space in the Lister Block to promote and sell local art work. The city's general issues committee voted Wednesday to lease unit 114 until June 2014.

This is "bringing arts to the centre of that wonderfully restored building," said Coun. Jason Farr, who represents Ward 2 downtown.

Located at 28-50 James St. N., the current Lister Block was built in 1923. It closed in 1995 and was seen as a symbol of downtown urban decay until the city renovated it. It reopened last year. The city spent nearly $30 million to restore it.

City offices occupy five of the floors, and the Hamilton, Halton, Brant Regional Tourism Association rents out ground floor space.

The large corner space will soon house the 28 Lister Chophouse Grill. That restaurant will seat 120 and include a 60-seat patio on King William Street. A soft launch is planned for September with an official opening planned for November. Owner Chris DesRoches is currently hiring for all positions.

Unit 104 will house the Mezza Caffe.

Unit 114 is 452 square feet. It will generate $12,960 annually for the city. The city will install baseboards to prepare for the new tenant.
