Horizon working into the evening to restore power in rural areas

It could be well into Friday evening before some homes in the Hamilton area will have power again, Horizon Utilities says.

Freezing rain and high winds knocked over trees and hydro wires after a storm moved through southern Ontario Thursday night, and crews are still trying to repair the damage.

"We had a number of outages this morning," said Horizon Utilities spokesperson Tony Iavarone.

As of 5 p.m., 204 customers in the area of Lynden Road and Highway 99 were still without power. Horizon says their service is expected to be restored sometime on Friday night.

"Given the location, it's a bit problematic because it's a rural area," Iavarone said. "But we have crews working there to fix the problem as quickly as they can." Outages occurred in parts and of Dundas and Ancaster and Flamborough.

The Hamilton-Wentworth District School Boardclosed severak schools for the day because of power outages: Ancaster High, Ancaster Senior, Balaclava, Beverly Central, Dr. J. Seaton, Dundana, Fessenden, Mount Hope, and Queen's Rangers.

Hamilton experienced showers for much of Friday, but the temperature stayed above the freezing mark after about 7 a.m.

More rain is in the forecast for Hamilton on the weekend. Environment Canada predicts Friday night will be cloudy, with a 40-per-cent chance of precipation. The temperature is expected to hover around 4 degrees C. Environment Canada pegs Saturday's high at 7 degrees and says there will be a 60-per-cent chance of rain during the day.

Relief from the wet and cold may come on Sunday — a mix of sun and cloud and a high of 9 degrees are in the forecast.
