Coun. Sam Merulla plans to introduce a motion on Feb. 6 asking for a city casino referendum in 2014.
Part of the motion will ask the next Liberal leader to urge the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation to pause the casino process in the meantime.
CBC Hamilton polled all six Liberal leadership candidates on whether they'd be willing to do this. We heard back from four. Here are their responses.
Eric Hoskins
"I have been consistent on the issue of casinos — no municipality will get a casino unless there is overwhelming support from that municipality. We have to make sure that municipalities demonstrate that support, and if that means OLG has to be more flexible on their timelines, then so be it."
Gerard Kennedy
Kennedy is "in favour of giving the community a voice and supports local municipal referendums on casinos," his office said in an email.
Charles Sousa
"Let's await local councillors' decision on the motion. Their say on this matter is first and foremost. I've always said that our government must to do a better job of listening to local communities. People deserve to have their concerns addressed before we take action and they expect us to collaborate with them when we do."
Kathleen Wynne
"Any new casino needs the support of the local population. I'm committed to increasing local control of the siting of OLG infrastructure. As premier, I would bring together municipal leaders, MPPs, and community leaders to determine the best way forward. I'm personally no fan of gambling and I believe strongly we should only put gaming sites in municipalities that have explicitly approved them and in the location they choose."
