Hamilton company lowest bidder on Windsor hospital demo

A Hamilton company has come in as the lowest bidder for a contract to demolish Windsor's former Grace Hospital.

Budget Environmental Disposal said it could do the job for $4.1 million. The highest of the six bids came in at $9.5 million.

"We're excited to be the low bid on the contract," Ian Bartels, the company's president, told CBC Hamilton.

Windsor's city council still has to vote on the deal, which could happen this week.

Work on the project is scheduled to begin within 7 to 10 days of a bid being approved. The winning firm would have 100 days to complete the job.

Bartels said the project is an extensive one. The hospital, he said, is 300,000 sq. ft. and seven storeys tall at its highest point.

Windsor city staff had estimated the project would cost between $2 million and $4 million.

"It's a little above what we thought, but it's within range. It's not that far above what our estimate was," Windsor city engineer Mario Sonego said.

"We move forward at this point."

Sonego said the city had budgeted $4.175 million for the demolition. That estimate included security, consulting and project management, none of which are included in Budget Environmental's bid, he added.

During the 2011 election campaign, Premier Dalton McGuinty promised $2 million to clean up the site. The province, on several occasions since, has maintained that the money was still available.

Budget Environmental Disposal was incorporated in 1993 and specializes in waste disposal, recycling and demolition. The company has worked on projects across Ontario, including the demolition of Ivor Wynne Stadium.
