It was a bad evening to be a driver in Hamilton Friday — and a busy one to be a police officer.
Police responded to 43 accidents in the city from 2 p.m. until around 8:30 p.m. on Friday.
"From 3 p.m. on it was busy as heck in here," said Joanne Engelhardt from the police communications office. "43 accidents for us in that timeframe is quite a bit."
But the 35 vehicle accidents and eight personal injury accidents are just the tip of the proverbial iceberg, she says. "There is also the countless number of people we directed to our accident reporting stations."
Hamilton EMS responded to eight accidents from 2:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. All were minor injuries, and two people were sent to hospital, officials say.
A 28-year-old woman from Haldimand County and her three-year-old son were killed in a six-car accident in nearby Caledonia on Friday afternoon.
The Highway 6 bypass was closed for several hours after the collision. OPP officials have not indicated if the crash was a result of the weather.
GO bus service was suspended from Hamilton to Toronto for several hours because of delays on the QEW. Service resumed late Friday.
"It was fairly bad," said Staff Sgt. Emidio Evangelista. "People don't adjust to the driving conditions, and this caught us early."
Evangelista said drivers should invest in snow tires, and be more mindful of the road conditions.
The reported snowfall total at the Hamilton Airport on Friday was 4.4 cm.
