High school teachers job action averted

The local bargaining unit for Hamilton high school teachers has reached a tentative agreement with the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board.
Job action was scheduled to being Monday morning. The Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation district 21 bargaining unit has suspended the labour action.
The agreement will now be submitted to the Minister of Education for approval. If the agreement is approved, Hamilton high school teachers will vote on the proposal.
Details of the agreement have not yet been announced.
Tentative deals also were reached with the high school teacher bargaining units in Guelph, London and Niagara, but other negotiations haven't been as successful. About 5,000 elementary teachers in York Region began job action Monday.
York union representative David Clegg said teachers will arrive only 30 minutes before classes begin Monday and Tuesday, and will leave no later than 30 minutes after students are dismissed at the end of the day.
The deals put forth over the weekend must still be approved by Education Minister Laurel Broten.
Progressive Conservative education critic Lisa MacLeod said Premier Dalton McGuinty promised parents that the school year would be free from labour strife if anti-strike legislation passed.
But MacLeod says McGuinty and Broten are not using their new powers to stop the strike action.
Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario president Sam Hammond said the government won't negotiate, but adds the teachers' action won't affect student safety.
NDP education critic Peter Tabuns says the Liberals were warned from the start that their constitutionally-challenged legislation would create conflict in Ontario schools.
They didn't just shoot themselves in the foot, "they've hurt children and families as well," he said.
