Former Boston Bruins star Stan Jonathan charged in shooting death

A famed retired NHLer has been charged in the shooting death of a Hamilton man.

Stan Jonathan, 57, a Six Nations hockey legend who once played for the Boston Bruins, is charged with criminal negligence causing death in the hunting death of Hamilton Mountain resident Peter Kosid.

Kosid was wearing camouflage and was bow hunting on a friend's property around 8 a.m. on Nov. 11. He was shot and killed along Third Line Road, said Const. Derrick Anderson from Six Nations Police.

Jonathan was deer hunting when he fired the shot into an area of bush. The bullet travelled about 375 metres. Jonathan went over to investigate and police were called, Anderson said.

The Ontario Provincial Police Forensic Identification Branch assisted in the investigation. Jonathan had a bail hearing in Brantford, Ont., Wednesday morning. He appears in Brantford court again on Dec. 14.

Jonathan played more than 400 games in the NHL from 1976 to 1983. He was best known as a member of the Boston Bruins.

Jonathan scored 91 goals and accumulated 110 assists in the regular season and had 12 points in 63 playoff games.

He is a well known member of the Six Nations community, Anderson said.
