Flamborough man asks city hall for Sunday gun hunting

A Flamborough man is feeling restricted by the lack of Sunday gun hunting in Hamilton, and has taken his fight to city hall.

Charlie Bois appeared before the city's planning committee Tuesday asking for Hamilton to join the roughly 150 municipalities that allow hunting with a gun on Sunday.

The committee accepted the presentation without acting on it. But Bois said he plans to pursue this further.

"I will educate myself as to what the follow-up needs to be and proceed that way," he said after his presentation.

Hunting is allowed on Sundays in Hamilton, but not with a gun. In order to allow gun hunting on Sundays, municipalities have to vote to permit it, said Shannon Gutoskie, spokesperson with the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH).

The OFAH has visited more than 100 municipalities in southern Ontario encouraging them to allow Sunday gun hunting, she said, and "we have been quite successful."

Bois works all week with his own business, Charlie's Carpentry Services, through which he builds staircases and does custom woodwork. That leaves him only one day for an activity such as duck hunting, for which a firearm is required, he said.

He hunts in Flamborough on Crown land and on private land with permission. He thinks Sunday gun hunting would benefit the area.

"I've been told it might affect local businesses who rely on tourism," he said. "But I feel it would be the opposite. You may have tourists who come into town to hunt."

Coun. Brad Clark asked how compatible Sunday hunting is with hiking.

"We've spent a great deal of time and money putting trails in and a lot of hikers go off the trails," he said.

Hiking "is one of the most popular pasttimes in the city."

Bois said most existing trails exist in zones where firearm discharge is forbidden.
