'She was from the old English world'

An elderly Stoney Creek woman is dead after an early morning townhouse fire on Friday.

The Hamilton fire department responded to an emergency call at 151 Gateshead Crescent just before 2. a.m.

Firefighters found a woman on the first floor of unit #10. Fire safety officer Dave Christopher said she was found in the kitchen trying to exit and appeared to have been overcome by smoke inhalation. Firefighters pulled her out of the home but she was pronounced dead soon after. The woman's dog has also died after being removed from the home.

Eileen Tougher said the victim was her best friend of 30 years. She said the woman was from England. "It's sad," she said. "She was a good, old soul. I can't believe it and her little dog also."

Tougher said the two met at a bowling alley about two weeks after her friend moved to Stoney Creek.

Don Nichols of Stoney Creek's senior outreach services told CBC Hamilton that he knew the woman for two years. He said he spoke to her Thursday night and was supposed to pick her up Friday. He helped her run errands. "She was from the old English world," Nichols said. He added that all her family is in England.

One neighbour told CBC Hamilton "she was an amazing woman.... she was almost the centre of the community here."

Thanks to the brick walls separating the units, firefighters were able to contain the flames to just one home. "The older units are built better than the newer ones," Christopher said. He added that the home did have working fire alarms and that the woman has relatives in Toronto who were being notified.

The Ontario Fire Marshal investigating to determine the cause of the fire.
