A 23-year-old man who was shot in the head on New Year's Day in east Hamilton has become the city's first homicide victim of 2014.

Police say they were called to Sherman Avenue North and Barton Street East at approximately 4:45 a.m. Wednesday morning, where they found the victim with a gunshot wound to the head.

The victim was taken to the Hamilton General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police are not releasing the victim's name until relatives have been notified.

Investigators believe the victim was at a house party on Sherman Avenue North before he was shot. They want to speak to anyone who attended the party.
