Early morning car fire 'suspicious,' police say

Fire estimated to have caused approximately $40,000 in damage

Police are calling a central Hamilton car fire "suspicious" and are treating the case as a possible arson.

At around 4:45 a.m. on Sunday, a parked car burst into flames in the middle of an alley near the intersection of East Avenue North and Evans Street, in the city's Landsdale neighbourhood.

The fire spread to two garages that back on to the laneway. Fire crews extinguished the flames, but the car was destroyed and the garages heavily damaged. No one was injured in the blaze.

"There was approximately $25,000 in damage to the vehicle, $10,000 to one garage and $5,000 to the other," said Frank Miscione, a spokesman for the Hamilton Police Service.

The fire has been "deemed suspicious and the Ontario Fire Marshal is investigating," he said. "It seems like an arson at this point."

So far, police don't have any suspects, Miscione added.

'Explosion'

The early morning fire woke Bill McCracken, whose backyard overlooks the entrance to the alleyway.

He said he heard an "explosion" and got up to see what caused the "boom."

"I thought someone was throwing firecrackers down the street."

When he got outside, fire crews were already dousing the flames.

McCracken called the incident "kind of scary" and said, "I know that stuff like this happens, but not around here."

It's unusual for people to park cars in the middle of the laneway, he noted, because city bylaws prohibit them from doing so.

A CBC Hamilton reporter knocked on the doors of both houses whose garages were burned in the fire. No one answered at either location.

Neighbours said one of the houses is vacant and hasn't had tenants for months.
